Riva del Vin from Ponte Rialto
A stone bridge was built on the site in the 12th century. Ponte Rialto was built
in 1588 following the collapse of a previous wooden structure in 1444.
this was caused by the combined weight of those gathered on the bridge to
celebrate the wedding of Marchese di Ferrara. The fourth bridge had a draw bridge
built to allow tall masted galleys to pass through.
The present bridge was designed by Antonio da Ponte in the 16th century 1588-1591.
Until 1854 it was the only means of crossing the canal on foot.
